Fisrt of all, I'm sorry for this long post.
  Potential impaction.
Dear Laura, it's sad what you say about your bb, I hope he's better. I've never had that problem in our family, or, maybe we have a similar thing but with a female. Her poos were a mass too, sometimes, and I stopped to give her fresh veggies for a couple of days, thinking it could be the reason. One month later, after some visits to the vet and many "combinations" (no veggies and heat; veggies and lots of hay; just a few veggies and heat; veggies each two days, another kind of veggies....), I discovered she loves lay on nude floor, even if weather is very cold! Specially at night; so, she starts to bite the blanket and take it off with hands, until the blanket is off at one corner. Then, she goes under the blanket and sleeps there all the night long, cold on belly and feet/hands and keeping warm her back. So, the problem was cold on her. Even, if windows are open, I must cover her or hold her, 'cos "normal cold" for piggies, is too much for her (she's old, about 4 years
old). I hope your bb is ok and it wasn't impaction. Anyway, I think males with impaction can live a normal life, so, don't worry, darling. A kiss for you and your babies.

  Coroplast and alternatives.
When I lived with my Bb (Pqnin), he had his cage (a normal one, opened) just to pee and poo, 'cos he slept into my bed and he spent all day in the living room, sitting, playing or sleeping on the carpet (or with the doggy on sofa). Even, he ate his veggies on it too. But, right now, there are five piggies in our family (two males, three females), so they can't be free all time as my Bb. I tried to find those famous C&C cage, but it's imposible in Spain. So, my father built two fences (a kind of), one for girls and another one for boys. They are 1,60 x 1,30 m. each one. It's enough for them, and they have (of course) free time too. So, space wasn't a problem, but floor was. I though about coroplast, but I couldn't find it so huge. So, I though the best solution was just a banket on the floor, but winter is quite cold and I was worried about those little feet, 'cos my room's floor is made of granite. So, I bought what you have under carpets to fix them, and to isolate and
keep warm the floor. It's a sort of blanket (wash machine, so no problem), and I put their blanket on it. So, it doesn't move even if they run and jump (or play their houses), and they are confortable and warm. If it's very cold, I put another blanket over the open cage (almost, 'cos they wanna watch everything), and they love it! They start to popcorn and run under the second blanket (over their heads) or lying on it on a side - very funny!
In summer time, I just put a summer-blanket or a pair of sheets. Or, if time's hot, I put some bricks too (it can be 40/42 degrees - Celsius!).
So, I mean if someone can't find coroplast, there are more alternatives. Even plexiglas or "wall vynil" is ok, if you put something on it, like my blankets or sheets. I hope this could help.

  Why a piggie?
Sorry for a long post, but I wanted to tell you many things!
First time I had a piggie in my hands was a boy's (my brother's friend), when I was about 15 or 16 years old. I told my parents I wanted a guinea pig, but they said I had to study and I loved going out with friends, so I couldn't have enough time to give him good care or pay everything he could need. My family always loved animals, but with responsability as first one. So, when I started to work some years later and I could pay all his bills and food and everything, I bought a pair of piggies. They were what I get the first time I was paid at job. And I was so pride! They were called Pequenin (what means little one) and Xiqui (same meaning). Xiki (or Xiqui), a female, dies a week later, and we still dunno why. She was very very little. So, Pequenin (or Pqnin), or my Bb, stayed at home. We had a old dog (a small female) and they were friends since very first time. Even, the doggy was afraid of Bb 'cos he always wanted to play with her long hair and munch it, so he ran
after the dog across the flat, so funny!
Well, Bb lived about 4 years more or less, and I told many times it was my very best experience in life. We slept together, played together, and travelled together too, 'cos I had to move on another city. Of course, it couldn't be without my Bb, so we took the train and the ship, almost 20 hours in total. But we were together.
A year later, I came again to my city, so that was 20 hours again, and he travelled again under my t-shirt, sleeping and kissing me (hidden from company workers, 'cos I didn't want him into the "store-room". He was a piggie, not a parcel).
Two years later, he died. He broke his spine, and we don't know how was it. I used to read everything about piggies to give him the best life, but something was wrong. I don't know. Next July, it will be 3 years without my Bb, and I still cry sometimes when I think of him, I've told it many times in my posts. And I will, I know.
But, life's on, and right now I have 5 piggies to take care of. And they're my life. This is my story, and I wantd to share it with all of you once more.
So, love your piggies, and enjoy by their side, life's very short!

  Warm regards,
Cris and the crew (Cosina, Mochin, Choco, mama-Wanda, and Hastur. Bb and Xiki in my heart).
