Bethany, we are so sorry that Sooty will probably have to be put to
sleep. In terms of how to help Silky understand what has happened, we
definitely recommend showing Sooty's body to Silky. This is called
"displaying the body" and, despite the somewhat cold-sounding term, it
will indeed help Silky see where her friend has gone. We have done this
many times. Sometimes a piggie will not really seem to notice the
body. Sometimes a piggie will lick the ears or body of the deceased
piggie. I think that showing the body is much better than having Silky
possibly think Sooty has simply left her.

As with humans, it sometimes takes a bit of time for the idea of death
to settle in. When we showed our Rippley's body to our Calliope (now
also deceased), Calliope studied Rippley for quite a while. Then we
took Rippley outside for burial. When we came back in, Calliope looked
up in shock, suddenly realizing exactly what had happened. I will never
forget the look of sad understanding on her face.

Hope this helps. Our best to all of you.

Cindy, Sunshine, Tumbleweed, and Friday
