Hi Pat,

Your posting reminds me of my little Windex... A year and a half ago, our 4 year old GP Windex started losing hair on her sides in an odd pattern and after several different vet trips, we determined that it was likely ovarian cysts, which are common in unspayed GPs (which are most of them since the surgery is so challenging).

We took Windex to a really amazing vet who specializes in exotics and who does a lot of GP work and has done hundreds of spaying surgeries and who has treated GPs with cysts. When he went in to do the surgery, he discovered that in fact what we all though were cysts was a uterine tumor, which he removed. Windex didn’t survive more than a few days after this (despite a really awesome surgery) and we discovered when we got the biopsy back that it was a very aggressive form of cancer which had likely spread.

We are glad that we tried everything we could to give Windex a chance at a longer life. We miss her a lot. I really think it’s a personal decision and I know people who go in both directions, in terms of doing everything possible vs. making the companion animal comfortable, but drawing the line at heroic interventions.

I don’t know whether this helps, but the vet we worked with is really awesome and he spent a lot of time with me on the phone before I decided to bring Windex to him (his practice is about 3 hours from me, in San Diego – I live in LA). I’m sure he’d talk to you or to your vet about Daphne.

His info:
Jeffrey Jenkins, DVM Diplomate ADVP
Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital
2317 Hotel Circle South
San Diego, CA 92108

Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help (feel free to email me directly).

Best,
Marielle
