Dear Jemma
I had a cat already before getting my two pigs. When they are in the garden
in their run in the summer, she is very protective of them and will always
be nearby to make sure they are okay.
At present the guineas are in a run in my bedroom for the winter. My cat
sits and watches them now and again, but is quite used to them now, and
doesn't really pay them much attention anymore. I have never seen her try
to attempt to 'jab' them through the bars of the run -- BUT I did make sure
I bought runs where this wasn't possible and both my runs have secure lids.
When I have my guinea pigs out for a run around on my bedroom floor, the
door is properly shut and the cat can't some in (much as she wants to!).
A cat is a preditor to guinea pigs and unless you have the most wonderful
cat in the world, there is a permanent danger that, given the chance, a cat
won't think twice about attacking a guinea pig. Even in 'play' they could
do serious harm. As long as your piggies are properly secure, having a cat
around them should not be an issue.
Have fun with your new cat!
Carole x
