I was fairly confident that some of my 14 piggies would be eligible for LAPS membership but when I tried to weigh them I had absolutely zero co-operation with getting them to stay on the scales. I then had an idea which worked really well. I weighed an empty pet carrier on the scales, then I put the piggy into the carrier and weighed that, and then did a simple subtraction to find the weight of the piggy! I am delighted to say that 3 of them are eligible (just). Orinoco (3 lb exactly) and Scampi and Mickey (both 3 lb 1/2 oz). Orinoco and Scampi were both Peter Gurney's piggies. Mickey is responsible for me having two herds of piggies rather than one. I roared with laughter when I read about Peter Gurney's "speech impediment" - how, whenever he was asked to take on another guinea pig, his lips wouldn't form the word "no" and it always came out instead as "oh alright then"!! I suffer from the same impediment. I had one large herd of piggies - one neutered male and lots of females - when a girl at the school where I teach told me that she was emigrating to Australia (from England) and couldn't take her much loved pet with her. She asked me "Please will you have my guinea pig?". Mickey was male but what could I say? (Not "no", obviously). She had him neutered and I had a whole new giant pen and hutch built, and got him lots of rescued females to keep him company. The girl who went to Australia will be delighted to hear that Mickey has qualified for LAPS.Best wishes to all gpdd members and their piggies.Stefanie
