Hi Slaves,

Penny is correct. Pellets were introduced into the UK to stop selective
feeding by guinea pigs and rabbits. My cavies have never taken to a
complete pellet diet. Like Penny we have always mixed our own. This
gives us the oppurtunity to fine tune protein, calcium and fibre
levels.

We also add dried herbs, dried meadow flowers and grasses as well as
dried chopped green oats. They do pick out the bits they like and eat
these first but eventually get around to most of the other things. I
don't overfill bowls, putting in a couple of handfuls at a time. Always
repeating this when the bowl is empty.

As with the Piggyfriends , plenty of hay, vegetables and forage is the
main part of our guinea pigs diet. We think of the dried mix just like
dog biscuit or kibble that you add to meat or canned food for our dogs.
It's there if they need it. The maize and flaked or micronised pea are
good for putting weight on pigs. We increase or lessen the amounts of
these as necessary.

Here in the Uk we have few large predators so guinea pigs tend to live
outside. Most of us live in houses with gardens So I guess it is very
easy for me to recommend fresh grass, herbs and weeds. it is probably
more difficult for slaves who live in apartments to find a good, clean
source of forage.

We get the dried plants and weeds from www.zooplus.co.uk.( based in
Germany ). I just put dried herbs into my Uk search engine and found
this site. Perhaps a slave in The States already knows where these are
available and could let other slaves know.

Best Wishes,

Antoinette and the Magic 61 ( yes I did it again, another new pig ).
