Hi Dawnda!
Thank you for the welcome! I'm happy to be here as I just happened to stumble upon this digest.
How old is your Dexter? What does he look like?
If you'd like to see pictures of my babies, just let me know and I'll send them to your email.

Subject: [Gpdd] misc - back from holiday...

We just got back from 3 weeks in the US visiting family and friends,
and I'm happy to report all the animals (cats, rabbits, and fish as
well as the piggies) are doing well. Rocky and Cocoa in particular
look about twice as big as when we left!! Although Rocky's bid to one
day become an LAPS piggie is looking somewhat in question, Cocoa is
storming ahead - it's funny how even though they're brothers they're
turning out different sizes. (Rocky eats really well and is just as
energetic, so I don't suspect any health issues.) We had someone
housesit while we were away, an acquaintance of mine. I left her
pages and pages of instructions about what they eat etc. (and, of
course, the 16-step cage cleaning procedure - can we all say "control
freak"?!) I hope she'll be happy to housesit again in the future...
here's a quote from an e-mail that made me laugh (the knowing laugh
of the fellow sufferer):

The Gpigs take me forever and I end up with such a mess it takes me
two hours to clean up
the area by the Gpigs house... have had to sweep and mop the floor and
out in to the carport.... It was a bit of a laugh, that was all after I
managed to get the little darlings in to the pet carrier. What a
noise they
make...... Funny though, I was knackered and I had not started to clean
the cage...

Fortunately she also wrote me how cute they are, so I think she was
okay with it overall. (-:

Cheers,
Suzy with Rocky and Cocoa

Subject: [Gpdd] rainbow bridge - condolences for Guinness

 Hi Penny,

I read about Guinness going in for surgery only just before I read
that he had gone over the bridge... I'm so sorry to hear the tumour
had gotten that bad. It's so tough for us to have to make those
decisions, but I think it is better that he didn't have to suffer not
being able to eat, and possibly hemorrhaging again. I'm glad to hear
the new piggy arrangement is working out, and that Tinsel has two
tiny new friends. I hope you are also feeling a little better soon.

Suzy, Rocky, and Cocoa

 Hi Joanne

I want to send a big welcome to you and your piggies!
I like all your cute pig names too. This is a great
group of people and I am sure you will like it here.
You will learn much more about guinea pigs as well.

I live In Middleport, Ohio now. I am down to just one
pig, Dexter. I had 9 pigs at one time, most of them
were rescues. I miss having a lot of animals, but one
is really easy to take care of. He keeps me company.

Sorry to hear of Benson passing away. It sounds like
he had a good life dispite his numerous health
problems. It is good that he had a nice person to take
care of him. If he had not, he certainly would have
died a long time ago. I send my condolences for the
loss. He sounded like a beautiful pig.

Subject: [Gpdd] [RAINBOW BRIDGE] Condolences for Guinness Piggyfirend

 Penny and Piggiefriends

It was with very heavy hearts we read of Guinness's departure to join other
Piggiefriends at the Rainbow Bridge. We are sorry our good wishes arrived too
late for him, though obviously, from what you have told us, it was already
too late way before he was admitted for surgery. We had never heard of such a
tumour before, and we are absolutely certain you made the right decision in
allowing him to leave when he did - to revive him would have been pointless and
 cruel.

We know how it feels to have herd numbers gradually diminish - we were 27
Dolly Mixtures once, and are now down to 14. Each departure is an enormously
painful wrench, and we know we still have 14 more heartaches in store for us.
But Debbie says the pleasure she gets from just being together compensates for
the torture of having to lose us.

We hope the girls are settling well in their new group. We are sure our
harem will be losing Claude, our only castrated boar, before too long, as he
can't seem to put on weight, and the place will not be the same without him.
Guinness was obviously quite a character with his history of escape, and he must
have known how much he was loved once he came to you. Not just gentle giants,
but all our piggies deserve a long obituary - it is our chance to express
publicly the love and respect we had for them. It is evident that Guinness was
very special to you, and we are sure you were special to him.

Our hearts go out to you all in your grief.

Debbie and the 14 Dolly Mixtures

Subject: [Gpdd] [gpdd] [health]- ill Guinea Pigs

Well I have a new one for all. I went over to a young girls this week with a very sick baby Guinea pig. This baby lost weight so fast it was unbelievable. So please always check your baby's every day.I would say this little guy is about 8 weeks old.He was very skinny and smelled to high heaven. His back legs were paralyzed.he also would fall over and he cried really bad.You know the please help me cry.Well the first thingI did was check his teeth they were over grown.I clipped those. Then the young lady had read to give Gator-Aid by dropper. This little guy drank so much I was sure he had no liquid in his body. After about 5 minutes he began to eat and has gained weight and is back with the other two piggies in his family and gaining weight. Before he was placed back with the other pigs he had a bath.Hope this helps even one guinea pig. The Gator-Aide was the green color one.He seamed to take to it right away.Hope you all have health guinea pigs today.Shelly

Hi all. I've been busy so not posting lately. I would like to offer my condolences to all slaves who have had masters cross the bridge. We seem to have had a lot lately. It's always hard to lose one of our unique fur babies. Each ones personality is so different in his/her own way but still manage to capture our hearts.

I would also like to welcome all the new babies. You have all gone to great "forever" homes and I hope you and your masters have many many years together filled with good health and fun.

For all of you who may be new to slavedom and wondering if your little one will ever learn to eat certain foods I have something on a lighter note. It has taken The Lady Bug a full five years to decide that she likes cucumbers, strawberries and watermelon. She literally snatches the watermelon from my hands and eats both flesh and rind. As you can see, she has very strong opinions and is slow to change her mind. Take heart guys as they will come around.

Hi Shelly. What a great thing you did for this baby and his owner.

You say you clipped his teeth. Was this the front ones as usually the back ones are done under light anesthetic and can be a bigger problem than the front ones. I'm surprised that at only 8 weeks he needed a trim. Is he on good quality pellets, red and green lettuce and have unlimited timothy hay? That should help his tooth problem as well as give him the vitamins and minerals he needs.

Gator Aid is NOT a good thing for piggies. It contains way too much sugar and minerals that can upset a piggies digestion. A better choice would have been plain water flavored with a little Pedilite (sp?) syringed into him. Has he been to a cavy savy vet to have his back legs and spine checked out to see why he can't move very well? This is a very young piggy to be having these kinds of problems. Is he by any chance a pet store purchase? Your friend having read somewhere that Gator Aid is ok to give GP's just points out the fact that there is an awful lot of very bad information floating around and sometimes it can be confusing.

Please recommend that your friend check out www.guinealynx.com and go to the diet and nutrition section. There is very good advice from very knowledgeable people here and you don't have to register to read any of it. Yes, some of these folks are in the vet field and do know what they're talking about.

Hoping for the best for this little one and, again, it was kind of you to take an interest in this poor baby.

Joan, slave to The Lady Bug
