Ruth, you are right about allergies being strange and coming on suddenly without warning.  Allergies are also specific.  For example, I am allergic to dogs and cats but not to piggies.

A person doesn't have to "do it yourself" though if you can see an allergist.  They can scratch test you for about anything under the sun.  You can ask (as I did) to be tested for allergy to guinea pigs.
