Hi Linn. Welcome to the GPDD and a big welcome to little Chukie.

If you still have alfalfa pellets you can keep feeding them to Chukie until he's around 9 months old. The same with alfalfa hay although the timothy is also necessary for his teeth and digestion. In young GP's the alfalfa is important for the added calcium while he's growning.

You didn't say what the vet treated his "lice" with and was everyone absolutely sure it was "lice"? It can be very difficult to determine a GP's age. Where did he come from and did they have any background information on him? What size cage does he have?

A couple of very good sources for information on the care and feeding of Guinea Pigs are www.guinealynx.com and www.cavycages.com. You do not have to register on either site to read the care info. You can treat for lice and mites yourself and save the money the vet will charge you. The guinealynx site has info on the product and dosing amounts. It's very simple and effective.

Good luck trying to litter train Chukie. Most piggies don't train well and just, by nature, go where they are or, if you're lucky, will pick "favorite spots" to use.

The Lady Bug and I hope that you and little Chukie have many great years together. Again, welcome.

Joan, slave to The Lady Bug
