Dear friends,
On the afternoon of June 6, 2007, we lost our beautiful and beloved Pepper,
the first Piggie Pal to join our family in 2001. She had such a sweet
disposition, and was so lovable all of her life. She never minded being
held, and there were times when she gave me tremendous comfort after the
loss of a fellow Piggie Pal. I remember when we lost our little M.C. I was
inconsolable because I felt that I had let M.C. down. She had been very sick
and I didn't even realize it...she hid it so well. By the time I got her to
the vet's office it was too late, and she died right on the examining table.
I was heartbroken. I lay on the couch crying and feeling absolutely
miserable when one of my sons brought Pepper to me. She lay on my chest with
her little head down as though she knew and understood what I was feeling. I
believe that she grieved with me that day. I will never forget it. We
developed quite a bond between us, my Pepper and I. If one of my sons
happened to be holding her and I was close by, she would leap from my son's
arms into mine. I was dumbfounded the first time she did that, and afterward
my sons would say to me, "Get ready, Mom. Pepper's getting ready to jump."
And I would hold out my hands to her and she would leap right onto my chest.
I was always so touched that she trusted me so completely as to make these
"leaps of faith", as I called them.
Not only was she a loving and trusting friend, she was also a wonderful
mother. She was only 6 months old when she had her first litter...Flick,
Fluffy, Cocoa, and C.J. We watched as she brought 2 of them into the world,
and kept watching over the weeks that followed as she lovingly raised them.
Her second litter came when she was about 1 1/2 years old and it was a
difficult one. Of the 5 darling little ones that were born, only our
precious Lucky survived. We weren't so sure that Pepper would survive. She
was so weak from the difficult labor that her legs trembled when she walked.
I was so very afraid that we would lose her. I kept bringing her fresh
greens, which she dearly loved, and encouraging her in any way that I could
to get better. And slowly she did. And she raised Lucky just as lovingly as
she did her first babies. I will never forget how that little fellow loved
to climb up on his mommy's back and rest there.
She was an alpha female, and liked to let all of the other lady pigs know it
when they had their floor time together. She never actually got into any
fights, but she would not back down if challenged. Usually, her dominance
was never questioned, except by Sweetheart, who is also an alpha female, so
we had to keep a close watch when they were around one another. She would
live with other females, but they had to accept that Pepper was the boss.
They always did.
How can I express how much Pepper meant to me? I have so many memories. I
can still see her precious little face...her adorable little black nose
surrounded by white whiskers, and her kind black eyes. Even to the last,
when I knew that she was weakening, she would look at me with such love and
kindness in her eyes. When she looked at me, I knew that I was loved and
trusted unconditionally. And she knew that I loved her in the same way.The
last night that we spent together, I fed her her favorite greens and stroked
her still soft and shiny fur and sang to her. Several years ago, I made up a
song for my Pepper-baby. I sang it to her all of her life, and she knew that
it was her song. As we spent those last moments together, I sang that song
to her. As I sang and petted her, she half closed her eyes in contentment. I
could tell that she was enjoying herself.
She was such a dear little friend...no one could ask for a better one. Rest
in peace my Pepper angel. You brought such joy into our lives. We will
always love and remember you, our one and only Pepper girl.
Sadly,
Sherry and the Piggie Pals
