Hi Giki. To release lead from a glaze you need heat and/or acid. Examples would be hot soup and tomato sauce. It can also be present in the slip used to form the dish, vase, whatever. The dishes I use for both myself and the Bugster are from China and I'm not at all concerned as the glaze is tight and not crazed or chipped. It also takes time for the lead to release. It is perfectly ok to drink from a crystal glass but storing alcohol in a crystal decanter will release small amount of lead from the crystal over a long period of time.

I don't think you give your babies anything that is acid or hot and the occasional tomato doesn't count as it's never been in contact with heat.

Since I'm an old lady I remember when the lead phobia started. It was in sub-standard housing where parents would let their children eat the paint that was loose on the walls. Over time, yes, SOME children showed signs of lead poisioning. When my daughter was little and at an age where she would do things like that, I made sure she didn't ingest anything that was bad including paint. Actually, paint doesn't taste very good and I never understood why some children would continue to eat it.

I've worked for a painting contractor who does commercial/industrial painting for years. The subject of lead is waaaay overblown and takes a good deal of research (too much for here) and time to weed through the hysteria and get to the real facts.

Bottom line, I wouldn't worry about my dishes as long as they are in good shape.

Hope this helps some of your fears.
