Hi Joan,
   
  Hershey definitely cannot hear or speak.  Tried the clapping in back of him at least three times last night with no reaction.  Made little Stuart jump, though!  This explains why Hershey didn't complain the time I trimmed one of his nails too short and drew blood - I felt so bad.
