The Kentucky Derby is always held the first Saturday of May for those of
you not terribly familiar with this event. It was 8 Derbies ago (this
being the 9th) that I went to a Kentucky Derby party and first viewed
upon a couple of guinea pigs for the first time since I was a kid. It
was the next day when my visiting friend said we should go out and get
me a couple of guinea pigs (Kack and Kaz, RIP) since I had told her that
I had always wanted a guinea pig when I was a kid but because we always
had a cat and dog, did not think it was the wisest of things. I also
doubted my mother would say "yes." I may have been wrong about that.
Apparently my mother had guinea pigs when she was little, among other
pets, although I wouldn't find out about that until fairly recently.

At any rate, there are soooo many Munchees, it is hard to keep track of
their adoption dates. In fact, I have to keep track on an Excel
spreadsheet when they were adopted and how old they are. Remember, the
majority of the Munchees are rescues which makes it difficult to know
exactly how old some of them are. It occurred to me just the other day
that rather than celebrating different adoption days, I should get some
special treats for the Munchees on Kentucky Derby day. Accordingly, I
am starting a new annual ritual this Saturday. While "we" watch the
Derby, I shall give them something special, something they don't get
very often. Radicchio is a favorite. Spring Mix maybe? I'll keep the
mint juleps to myself.

BTW, those guinea pigs I saw at the Derby Party? Turned out the female
was pregnant. As it happened, 9 months later I ended up rescuing two
very sweet brothers from her litter who I re-named Korkee and Kodee.
They lived to be about 6 and are dearly missed still, as are Kack and
Kaz and all of those that have gone to the Bridge.
