Suzy,
Don't worry about your little boys toilet habits. Most piggies behave in just the same reckless fashion leaving us slaves to clear up after them. It only becomes a worry if by lying in the urine they develop urine scald, leading to soreness, hair loss and pain.
Unless the piggy is immobile for some reason eg. arthritis or injury it is unlikely to cause a problem.
Some of mine leave neat little piles to be cleared away, others just mess up their whole pen, including their sleeping boxes. Some will never leak when they are on my lap, others just don't care, especially if I have forgotten to put them on an old towel first.
Rocky and Cocoa are likely to pee and poo all over their home once they have become accustomed to sitting out watching the world go by. While they are still nervous, their sleeping place is the safest place to use. Changing the messy area most often is the right thing to do.
I have met the occasional piggy who has been trained to use a litter tray but have never tried this myself.
--------------------------------------------
I had more time today to Google Vetbed and have only found UK suppliers although, like Deb, I also saw it on Ebay. It is very light but bulky so I dread to think what shipping costs might be.
I had a look at the page mentioned by Dee and Joe. The product called "Palace Pet Bed" looks similar, although it says that the smaller pieces are rubber backed, unlike my Vetbed, but it is frighteningly expensive and I hope that someone comes up with a product at a more reasonable price. Next time I am at the pet food supplies shop I will find out the price of Vetbed. It is a long time since I had to buy any as it seems indestructibile.
I like to put a piece in my carriers when I am taking piggies to visit the rodentologists. I put a thick wad of newspaper in the bottom, then the Vetbed and some hay and food. It's a long drive there and back, a lengthy visit (including coffee and biscuits ) and a look at the patients in the hospital and any babes that might have been born there plus a chat to the boarding piggies etc.etc............... When I get home and return the dry piggies to their pens, any urine is in the soggy newspaper, which can be thrown away. The Vetbed pieces are shaken out and go into the washing machine ready for next time.
