[Gpdd] [misc] How can you tell when a pumpkin is ripe?

There are lots of pumpkins in the shops at the moment because it is nearly
Hallowe'en.  I bought one for the piggies to try, but it was very hard so I
put it in the vegetable rack.  A couple of days later it was all gooey and
dripping on the floor!  How can I tell when it is ready to eat?  I don't
want to give the piggies something that isn't ripe and upset their tummies.  
Any advice gratefully received.
