Hi Grace. Don't separate the mom and babies, unless the babies are boys, of course!

By all means handle the babies as that's how they become socialized with humans. Some pigs are just naturally shy around humans. Sit by their cage and read or sing or just stay quiet and that will help them get used to your presence. After awhile just drape your hand in the cage with them. After awhile they'll get used to that as well.

After doing that for several days, have a piece of lettuce or favorite treat in your hand. Do that for as long as it takes until they become curious and show an interest in what's in your hand.

When you attempt to pick them up, use a towel or upturned pigloo, or even a cardboard box so they feel safe. Just keep working with them and they'll come around. The key to all this is patience and understanding that it's natural for them to want to run from you.

How does mom react to you? She's the one teaching the babies about the big world.

  Hope this helps.

Joan, slave to The Lady Bug
