Well, yesterday afternoon I noticed that even with the painkiller, Mimi is still sometimes whimpering when she poos. We're pretty sure it's when she poos, not when she pees. Also her poos are in clumps now, sometimes without any formed poos in them at all. It's not diarrhea, but blobs of poo. So I called the vet & left a message with his voice mail & he called me back this morning. He said to keep with the painkillers & try to get her to eat as much hay as possible & cut back her pellets a little. He said about maybe on Tues. having a sonogram done on her to see if there is any stones the x-rays didn't pick up. Ugh... sonograms are soooo expensive. So that is probably what we will have to do. I have so many questions that I probably won't remember them all, but here goes...
Can guinea pigs get parasites or worms in their stomachs? Dr. Hall said it's very rare, but I'm wondering if it would be possible for them to test for that. Lori said she did come in to the Humane League with a large group of piggies, so maybe she picked up something from one of them.
Can anyone refresh my memory on what is the correct dosages of Simethicone & Kaopectate? I got some of both to keep on hand just in case, but it does me no good if I can't remember the dosages!
Also about her food. I talked to Dr. Hall about this & he seemed to think it could be a slim possibility. The food the Humane League had her on is called "Brown's" guinea pig food. It came in a large 25lb. bag & they store it in a shed out in back of the building. Well, the weather here was HOT this summer & even up until last week was still hot. When we picked her up at the beginning of the foster, I went out to that shed with Lori & the temperature in there had to have been over 100 degrees. I was wondering if it's possible the food spoiled. But then why would it have taken her 5 weeks to get sick when she was eating it all that time. So I bought her a new bag of Brown's at the grocery store today. It's only a 5lb. bag, so it shouldn't lose it's nutrition like the 25lb. bag. I hate for her to be eating that garbage though. The first ingredient is Alfalfa meal. I know that's not good, esp. considering she may have a stone. Here's the breakdown: crude protein- 15.0%, crude fat- 3.0%, crude fiber- 14.0%, moisture- 15.0%. I don't know what Oxbow's breakdown is, but I'm sure it's better then this. It's all she'll eat though! She hates the Oxbow & Dr. Hall said with all the digestive issues we shouldn't mess with her diet too much.
Well, I guess that's all my questions for now. I'm sure I'll think of more later! Sorry to be such a pain, but we're so worried about her. She's so young, I can't stand the thought of losing another piggie so soon. Please keep her in your prayers. Thanks.
