Hi Rachel. Sorry to hear about little Samson not doing well. How old is he?

Do you know how much weight he's lost? The only way to know for sure is to weigh him every one/two days the same time each time.

What you can do is have your vet do a culture to determine EXACTLY what bacteria is causing his infection. The he/she can prescribe the appropriate antibiotic. If he's on the course of antibiotic long enough, it should help get rid of it. Yes, antibiotics can make your GP eat less and appear to not feel good. This is where the weighing come in as if he starts to lose too much weight you can supplement with Critical Care. If you are in the US, no prescription is needed to buy this BTW. Actually, you can order it online with no prescription no matter where you live. Whenever you give an any kind of antibiotic you should follow it 1-2 hours later with a probiotic. This will help keep the digestive tract healthy and counter some of the damage an antibiotic can do to digestion.

Critical Care can be ordered from Oxbow directly. They will ask for the name and number of your vet but I've never heard of them following up with anything. If this makes you uncomfortable there are other sources online that don't ask any question at all. www.calvet.com is one of them but there are many more.

Hope this helps and give little Samson a cuddle from me.
