Subject: [BEHAVIOR] Song chrripup

Dear All

One of our four guinea pigs is in the habit of singing or chirping once a
month. Vanilla is seven months old and has been singing once a month during
the night. Like others my wife and I thought it was a bird. However our
budgie, Mr. Darcy was not the source of the sound. Vanilla usually has a
number of chirping sessions during the night. When I have gone to where the
cage is there is no sign of distress from her, our three other guinea pigs,
our rabbit or our budgie. In fact Mr. Darcy will sometimes chirp a few
replies. The only thing that may be the cause of her singing is the fact
that it happens when she is in heat. This could explain why the other pigs
sometimes sniff her. We do not have any male guinea pigs but she did live
with her brothers before it was time for them to move out. It’s a long story
but we brought two guinea pigs which both gave birth to more guinea pigs.
One had a litter of four one had a litter of two. Out of these new guinea
pigs we kept the two females and took the six four males to the shop where
we had got the original two guinea pigs from!

I know there is some confusion about guinea pig singing and so I hope the
above adds to the information about why they do this. To me it appears
Vanilla is trying to tell the world that she is on heat and would like to
find a boy friend. Next month I will try record the singing.

Thank you for reading,

Regards,

Paul Everett
