Hi Mary,  I know  of no Humane Society or Govt shelter that spays and 
neuters guinea pigs. I would guess that you spoke to a fairly low level 
employee or volunteer.  Spaying guinea girls is not that dangerous if you go 
to an exotics vets with many of these operations under his or her belt, but 
their are very few of these specialists.  The problem is that old one that 
the value (perceived) of guinea pigs as compared to the cost of their neuter 
or spay has the result that not that many proportioally are actually 
performed, present company excepted.  I accept that I could be wrong.  So 
get your girls spayed but make sure its an exotics vet with many successful 
spays to their credit.
