[Gpdd] HEALTH - LCMV Virus

Hi Digesters,

In May 2005 the CDC released the warnings about pet rodents transmitting the Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus. It was especially a concern for pregnant women. One guinea pig was infected, though normally it is thought that guinea pigs are not common carriers of the virus, it's mostly mice.

My husband and I have had our boy pigs for over 4 years now. We're thinking about starting a family and I'd like to know your thoughts on the risk of me being pregnant and having guinea pigs in the house. The articles I've read suggest that you should get rid of your pet rodents, which is not an option, no way, they're our babies! Also letting someone else handle the fecal matter and cleaning duties, and putting the pigs in a separate room, etc.

I guess my question is if we've had our boys for so many years, is there even any risk anymore?

Anyone with some insight on this, especially if you have a medical background or experience in this area, please weigh in and let me know what you think. I appreciate it very much.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the sick piggies out there and their slaves, and anyone who has suffered a loss.

Kim
