Poor Doris,

Some piggies just seem prone to getting UTIs, like some people.

I use Septrin children's suspension antibiotic for my herd. I've Googled this and Septrin seems to be one of many names for the same product but is yours the children's one, which needs a lot of shaking to mix the solution? My piggies get 1ml. of this twice a day.

I have had the occasional sow needing a long course of this to clear up an infection but not as long as six weeks.

Do follow up the antibiotic with a probiotic to put the good bugs back.

Cranberry juice is reputed to be good for people with UTIs as well as piggies so you are doing the right thing there.

Have you ever tried using an over the counter remedy instead of an antibiotic for a UTI? I hate keep giving antibiotics to my piggies if there is an alternative. In England there are several to choose from. I have used Cymalon with success but there are many others. This is a UK site but you can see what it is like here http://www.simpleascymalon.co.uk/

I expect that there are similar products available to you. Cymalon comes in little sachets. The piggy dose for this is 1/4 of a sachet mixed in an eggcup of water and syringed in over the course of 2 days. It often clears up the UTI that quickly.

Sorry to the folks who have seen me post about this before!!

Not to be used at the same time as the antibiotic but something to think about for next time.

Another alternative is the old fashioned human remedy of barley water. Not the bottled drink but the home made variety. It is fiddly to make and I have burned a pan or two ( I'm no cook! ) but the recipe is on Peter's page http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/cystitis.htm This really does work.

Love and hugs to Doris ( and Audrey and Olivia too of course ).
