When I had the triplets and a C&C cage, Napoleon's side was 2 and 3/4 of a
grid. I just overlapped the grids and used cable ties to secure them. I
would make the base and then connect the grids around the outside of the
base, though.

My two would love to have a C&C cage, but that won't happen just yet. No
room, no time, and Guido needs to be neutered first!
