yes Mary Louise, The first symptom may be thinning hair on the flanks
similar to what you get with mites, except its not mites. Second the start
drinking allot, then they drink incessantly like they are burning up( they
are, they lose weight too) Then they just start to waste away, one breeder I
talked too called it wasting away disease like their is no cure. In past
years we had jillions of conversations and found out 2 cures one is spay, 2
hormone treatment. One vet told me that women are the only mammals in the
animal community required to keep baby making equip. after its use is over,
it just causes high amount of trouble including cancer. Then I started
studying rabbits a year ago and found out its even more true with them and
they recommend spaying as soon as possible with tumors starting at about 2
years. So if you haven't had gp's girls living past 4 or 5 you may not see
it but over that its very high if you have a large enough population to get
a decent sample size. Spay your lady pigs, my vet, whose a super surgeon,
says he even prefers spaying girls rather than boars in a herd because the
girls incision is higher up and gets dirty less and the males have much
fewer complications later in life
Best regards
Sandy
