[Gpdd] MISC: Goodbye to Babu?

Some of you may remember that my sweet lady guinea pig Nani Alice recently died, leaving Babu Franklin all by his lonesome. At that time, I was either going to look for a middle-aged to older female to join Babu, or find Babu another home where he could have the company of other guinea pigs. Well, I know a woman who is very sweet and responsible, and used to be a co-worker of mine. She and her family love animals and have three piggies of their own. To make sure that I would not be handing over an ailing creature, Babu got his regular checkup yesterday from the local exotics vet and got a clean bill of health. His adoptive human family came over this afternoon to meet Babu Franklin, really liked him (and he seemed comfortable with them too -- he even came out of his cave into the "open" even though there were four of them he had never met before!) and took him to their home. They will see how he gets along with their other piggies. If it doesn't work out, he can always come back to me (they live only about a half hour away), and if it does work out he'll have a much better living situation than he could ever have with me. This family doesn't have a lot of money, and so I will be covering his future vet bills, which I would have done anyway of course had he stayed with me. It feels so strange to be sitting and typing in my office room, where Babu lived until just about an hour ago -- and to hear no little rustlings, no metallic clics of the water bottle, no gnawing of teeth against wood, or crunching of veggies. After Nani Alice died I handled Babu a lot more so he wouldn't be lonely, and we began to bond more -- so it's a particularly hard time to say goodbye. Because I'm allergic to guinea pigs, Babu's leaving signifies not only his individual departure, but also most likely the end of my ever living again with members of this sweet, gentle species. Well, thanks for humoring me and reading such a long e-mail. I miss my little Babu Franklin, but I have high hopes he will blend in well in his new surroundings and know he will be happiest with the company of his own kind.
