Ann,

I use the same system as you for the Piggyfriends' pens, newspaper on the floor and hay on top.

Years ago, our Rainbow was always getting hayseeds in his eye so I switched him to shredded newspaper bedding for his own safety and gave him his munching hay in a rack. He never seemed to mind and lived to be seven.

As long as you know that the newspaper is safe to eat I cannot envisage a problem with using it for bedding. There is a limit to the amount that can be composted and paper must be just as cosy as hay for sleeping. Newspapers in England do not use toxic ink and I would imagine that your paper is just as safe.

I have had the same trouble with horrible haybales from local farms and have had to start buying it from the pet store instead, which costs a fortune, but I was throwing away so many thistles, sticks and lumps of dried mud that there was not much left for the piggies.

Give the paper a try and see if the pampered piggies of Piggyville complain.

Penny and the Piggyfriends.
