[Gpdd] health: neutering

I've been lurking since my beloved Cindy died last January.  Since then I adopted two females.  The other day I was in a pet store just watching the female guinea pigs and noticed one guinea pig acting like a boy.  I called the manager over and sure enough he was a boy.  She immediately put him in the boy's side but the others started attacking him.  The scene was horrible to watch.  She took him out and he calmly sat in her arms.  I just couldn't let him be put back in there so I bought him.  Since I have girls at home, I thought he'd make a good class room guinea pig.  (I teach 1st grade.)  He loves the students and comes out to see them.  I couldn't stand the thought of leaving him alone on the weekend though so I brought him home along with his big cage this past weekend.  He met "the girls" under close supervision and they all seemed to get along.  The girls ignored him for the most part.  I would love to bring him home on most
evenings and especially every weekend but the cage is cumbersome.  My idea is to have him neutered so he can live with the girls on the weekends.  I could just bring him home in an easy to carry box.  Has anyone done anything like this before?  How old do they have to be before they can be neutered?  Do you see any potential problems?
Thank you.
Karen
