Hi Dave
Just wanted to add our condolences to the many you have already
received on the early departure to the Rainbow Bridge of your dear
little Snuggles. Hopefully you will be convinced by now that in no
way can you blame yourself for Snuggle's death. You were utterly
correct in wanting him to eat as soon as he came round, and it sounds
as though it was the vet's mistake in not realising he was not fully
awake when he presented the cucumber. Or, indeed, there may have been
some other complication completely unconnected with the cucumber
which caused the gagging and demise.
We suffer terribly here from the lack of adequate vet care, although
from what Penny says it is not all that much better in parts of the
UK. We had Claude castrated at the Cambridge Cavies Trust, and have,
in the past, taken a very sick piggie all the way from here in France
to Penny's rodentologists at Cavies Castle, but sadly these are not
an option for every pig, both because of the cost and because of the
stress such a long journey would entail.
You did your utmost for Snuggles, and we are quite sure he realised
how very much he was loved. He will have lots of friends at the
Rainbow Bridge, but we know there will always be sorrow in your
hearts when you think of him.
Hopefully the words of comfort you have received from all over the
globe will go some way to easing the pain.

"We patronize them for their incompleteness,
for their tragic fate of having taken a form so far below ourselves.
And therein we err, and greatly err.
For the animal shall not be measured by man.
In a world older and more complete than ours
they move finished and complete, gifted
with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained,
living by voices we shall never hear.
They are not brethren, they are not underlings;
they are other nations, caught with ourselves
in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners
of the splendour and travail of the earth".
