M-
I have heard of dipping the toenails in cornstarch or in flour. When I used to trim Molly's toenails I always kept a Dixie cup of flour next to me just in case. I only ever cut too short one time & immediately dipped it in the flour, which stopped the bleeding. I felt sooooo horrible! I don't cut Mimi's toenails cause they are jet black & I can't see the quick. I'm so afraid I will cut too short that I take her to the vets & let them do it. It only costs $7.00 every couple months, so I don't think that's too bad.
As for other emergency tips, I always keep a bottle of baby's simethicone on hand, in case of a gas attack & some liquid Immodium. Also I keep painkiller & motility meds on hand just in case too. My vet ok'd the painkiller & motility meds after I talked to him about it. Also important is to make sure they don't get expired either, since I don't need them often (thank God!) If I think of anything else I'll let you know.
