One thing I've done successfully when hand-feeding is giving them dry  
pellets.  Just take a pellet in your fingers, get it behind the  
incisors and gently push it as far back as you can (be careful with  
longer pellets ... 1/4" is a good length to start with).  If you  
don't push it far enough, they just spit it out.

It's a lot less messy and, since you're not feeding mostly water,  
you're more likely to see a weight gain, especially if you hand-feed  
several times a day.  Also, since it's their regular food, it keeps  
their system working close to normal.

Anyway, it's a good thing he's fighting the syringe ... that means  
he's feeling better ... but if you're giving an antibiotic, make sure  
he gets the full dose, even if that means giving only 0.05 ml at a time.
