Penile Amputation

Sunday morning 12 June 2009 3:30 GMT

I just spook to Vedra Stanley-Spatcher of the Cambridge Cavy Trust (CCT)
and Guinea Pig Hospital. In her 40 years of surgical experience on
cavies she has never heard of a case of penile amputation. This is the
procedure she uses: Rimadyl for pain 10 mg injection 30 minutes pre-op.
This would be 0.2 ml injection if using 50 mg/ml Rimadyl solution.
Anesthesia with isoflurane, 3.0% induction, 1.0-2.0% maintenance. She
inserts a lubricated Jackson cat catheter into the male urethra and
pushes the stone back into the bladder. If the stone has somehow adhered
to the urethra she attaches a syringe containing Ringer's solution and
flushes the stone into the bladder. It is much easier to remove the
stone from the bladder. Only a small incision is needed. Suture with
Vicryl 3-0. Turn off isoflurane; flush with oxygen and the patient
should be wide-awake and eating within 15 minutes. Rimadyl 10 mg can be
given orally (PO) 8 hours after surgery. For the next 3 days Rimadyl PO
10 mg q12h. Also Septrim antibiotic = Pediatric Bactrim PO 0.5 ml q12h
for 7-10 days. Septrim = Sulfamethoxazole 200 mg and Trimethoprim 40 mg
in 5 ml.

Vedra also told me that the website should be up in a week. She stressed
that you should have your vet call her before doing any surgery that the
vet does not have experience in doing. Or if the vet just has a
question. The mobile medical help line is 44 (country code) 7721026401
(cell phone. Geocites the website provider went out of business. The
Down Under Tour was canceled due to transportation problems.

My advice to all slaves everywhere is to join the CCT. It is only 25
British Pounds/year no matter how many piggys you have and you get
unlimited phone consultations. If you can travel to the CCT you get free
worming every three months for all your cavies. The CCT also provides
nail clippings and dental treatment and is open 7 days a week. It is
also a full service state of the art hospital. When the website is up
you will see where you can pay by PayPal.

Cheers, Ann and the Rescued Piggys of Piggyville Tampa Florida USA
