The 4 most common reasons that cavies go off food are, malocclusion,
oral thrush, gastric bloat and cystitis. The vet has ruled out
malocclusion but is treating Molly for a bladder infection. It sounds
like the antibiotic she is taking is pediatric Bactrim. The dose should
be 0.5 ml PO q12h for 10-14 days. Pediatric Bactrim = Trimethoprim 40 mg
and Sulfamethoxazole 200 mg in 5 ml. All cases of cystitis or bladder
infection should also be treated with Rimadyl. Dose 5-10 mg PO q12h for
10-14 days. The Rimadyl is for treatment of pain and inflammation. Pain
alone will put you and a cavy off food.
If Molly has gastric bloat she should be treated with veterinary
preparations for gastric bloat in cattle. Blot Guard or Burp at a dose
of 2-10 ml every 2 hours until the bloat is relieved. Metaclopromide at
a dose of 0.2-1.0 mg/kg PO q12h may improve the condition.
When was the last time the vet looked into Molly’s mouth? If she has
oral thrush, which is a fungal infection of the mouth, she will not want
to eat. Oral thrush is treated with Daktarin Oral Gel 0.5 ml 2-3 tomes
daily as required. Daktarin Oral Gel = miconazole 200 mg per 1 g of gel.
Fungal infections if gone untreated can become systemic.
I hope this helps. Please buy a scale ASAP and weigh your cavies weekly.
