Sarah,

Abscesses can most certainly appear on the jaw. In fact, under the chin seems to be the most common place for them to occur. They seldom affect a piggy's ability to eat nor does the piggy seem to notice them in the early stages but they do need expert treatment. If Petereedish does have an abscess it will need to be lanced and cleaned out by your vet, possibly many times before it has gone away completely.

The contents of an abscess are toxic and he will need to be kept away from other piggies until it has cleared up.

Lumps and bumps of all kinds can occur just about anywhere on a piggy and telling them apart comes with experience.

A lipoma, a benign fatty lump, which can be moved around beneath the skin as you describe needs no treatment, unless it should become so large as to cause problems.

I recommend that you take your boy to the vet asap to find out what exactly is happening and to set your mind at rest.

Best of luck.

Penny and the Piggyfriends.
