I would guess it would be a good idea to get the vet to check him out with a 
lighted scope and get a good idea if his teeth or any other part of his 
anatomy is inflamed, swollen, or malformed so that he can't drink smoothly. 
I know you are very experienced but do be sure to tell the vet if this is 
new or coming on slowly or  fast and just how it came on and rule out if 
it's dangerous or just sloppy manners, he could rule out a growth or 
inflammation, good luck
