One way to save money on hay on hay is to find a local "hay buddy" as high
quality grass hay is available in most localities where horse supplies are
sold. Make sure it smell good, looks good and isn't really dusty and has no
black spots or moldy musty smell. Each bale is made up of several chips
which are stuck closely together, between 8 and 10 I'm guessing. A chip is
allot of hay so the best scenario is to get hay, that's been kept indoors,
and split it into chips, and enough members are involved to each take a
chip. If you can't find enough members donate the extra to your local piggy
or rabbit shelter or regular ASPCA or Humane Society, they use it too. Your
hay should cost between $7 and $15 per bale, so you can see having buddies
gets you the best quality hay at super cheap prices. So split up, your costs
are small, split up the car pool duties to buy the hay too. A last ditch
effort if you cant find buddies is to ask for a substantial price cut to
take part of a bale, or if its a big operation there is often enough loose
CLEAN hay around that they will let you pick up some or buy for a buck or
two, never forget the power of negotiation. Keep your hay loosely packed
into a cardboard box or plastic bag, but both should have lots of air
circulation. Poke holes in the bags, especially close the box incompletely
so the hay stays fresh with lots of air circulating. if their is any dust
pack it outside so the dust blows away. Try to buy about a month's worth at
a time, no more than 2 months. This beats store bought hay in quality by a
huge margin and is even better than pricey on line stuff. Just make sure its
great quality and not too dusty and is grass, orchard or Bermuda, not
alfalfa.
