hi Carol,

I appreciate your care and concern, and you know by now that Mercy went to the bridge...and it was hard for us but I could not let him suffer, he was not eating anything, and the two times he drank from the sipper tube on his own, it was hardly anything that he swallowed, because most of the water went down his chin...I don't understand how this can happen, and I did read your post about your piggie, (was his name BG, I am so sorry for your loss.)
Anyway I feel for you about the way you had not been able to spend time with him; i understand that completely. But, I am sure he loved you regardless.

Why do these things happen to these sweet little creatures? I mean, they are pets. It is interesting that Vedra said the teeth-thing is usually secondary.
The vet we go to is not one who will file the teeth unless the pig is anesthetized however, they are very good in the work they do. Of course, since I live in Hawaii, the specialist (she does care for all the bunnies from the rabbit sanctuary too on this island) is just one of two and I do not know of another small animal specialist.
I become confused with all the input on Gpdd, when there are issues about vets. I just do not know what to think about it all anymore.

the other thing about Mercy, was I noticed right away that he had labored breathing, and i did consult the vet via phone and she suggested that i take him back to the shelter and ask them to humanely euthanize him, when i mentioned the labored breathing ---which is a sign of pneumonia--to the vet, she said that was probably what he had, and I am sure he was just not cared for and so he got pneumonia. I know only too well about pneumonia since my Gin Gin had it. Mercy had most likely gotten too cold at night, at the shelter ---God knows how long he was there--at night the temperature drops, and he was outside. Horrendous. I did write a letter to the newspaper about that regarding the humane society, but not to accuse anyone because what if they are doing the best they can? please, I need to look at it as they are doing the best that they can, and give them the benefit of the doubt, so to speak, and hopefully, the same goes with vets.

I am taking two piggies ( a baby boar, Cocoa, and my oldest 'piggette', Cheyenie, to the vet tomorrow so i will ask questions about ivermectin, anesthesia, etc. teeth etc. at least the vet has the state-of-the-art hormonal treatment for cavies for ovarian cysts.
I am just confused about teeth as secondary issues, urine tests, tooth filing under anesthesia...but it is probably because right now i have stuff to do and by later on, i will clear my head enough to really think about it.

"the woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep...."

In love and light,
Ellen
