Hi all,

Thank you for the letter about the various guinea pig pellets, Sandy.

I have been getting hay and pellets from a place in Washington State (Northwest coast in the US) called

Kleenmama's Hayloft

and it really is good hay and the pellets are either timothy hay-based or alfalfa-based for the younger pigs; both include the vitamin C, which oxidizes fast. Everything is kept in my freezer, until I put it them in airtight containers to dole out each day. I did go a little crazy with the various guinea pig chows/pellets at the pet store. Living on a rather crowded island in the middle of the Pacific it is easy to go to the store and not find what you are looking for in the way of pellets. That is why I tended to buy whatever was there, until I started getting the Kleenmama pellets.

But Rufie does not like that type.

By the way, the vet did not reach a diagnosis of Rufie's weight loss -- she just said to check and it may be his teeth. I do not think it is his teeth, though and he stil weighs about the same.

He likes the Kaytee Timothy Complete pellets and I used ot get Forti- diet (Kaytee) until I noticed the pet store was out of it, then I got the kaytee Exact for treats only. Then I mixed a cheap brand from Wal Mart which I dont want to do again. Also there is the Hartz brand Guinea Pig CLassic pellet. So I have been mixing all of that, without the Timothy Complete, except for the Exact because it is too costly, it is just for treat.

But Rufie eats the Timothy Complete mixed with the regular Kaytee Pellet for GP's. If they would get the Forti-Diet again then I would have that, sometimes they just run out. Thge other pigs like the Hartz Classic mixed with the Kleenmama pellet, both alfalfa and timothy types, although I have not settled on one type as it gets a bit overwhelming when the supplier is out and the guineas are picky eaters if it is something new for them. Now I am wondering if the Kaytee Forti-Diet is still being made or if it has been discontinued. Any clues ??

Another type Kaytee makes is Forti-diet Pro Health. The guineas like that but I don't think Rufie does. He alwaysjust liked the regular Forti-diet.

Bye for now

Ellen and the ten
