?Hi Linda. I respect your opinion. My experience has been different even
with Manny a single pig then Sammy also a one off. but many people have more
and at that point it's pretty much impossible to live pest free without
help. With a singleton piggy it's possible for her to go thru life without
visible parasites however the ivermectin kills external parasite like mites
that many of us had come in on hay or bedding, she might scratch or shed too
much or seem uncomfortable. Sammy calls me when his get up a population that
bother him. I keep him very clean, and buy great hay a bedding but still
they still persist. I don't recommend the scrape test vets do as it is hit
or miss and only may catch burrowing mite while there are several other
types that occur such as fur mites, and those that come in on dogs or cats.
Worse ye are the unseen internal parasites that can be passed at birth, esp.
if the mother has been around rabbits. his one parasite called e.c. or e.
cunniculi can come from mom at birth and stay dormant and therefore
undetectable for years until old or stress or other illness weaken the
piggies immune system and allow the e.c. to wake up so to speak. the results
are horrifying and very difficult to diagnose. Note it is rare in piggies
unless there is exposure to rabbits who have a very hi exposure rate but we
have had a documented case here on the digest. Also granted ivermectin and
panacur are them selves poison and great care must be taken in dosage,
follow Ann's protocol, and even check the vets calculations. So it's up to
the individual to decide, based on their history and exposure and ability to
swallow huge vet bills, and taking into expense the cost and danger of doing
it or not.
I know I haven't been able to keep Sammy mite free without, and I have no
idea if his breeder also had bunnies, so given the info whee can all decide.
Best regards. Sandy and Sammy
