Although there are other possible answers for the bare spots dont let the
vet rule out mites with a scrape test. I recently posted that these are 5
kinds of mite and only one burrows. Is it possible they are being barbered
by a third pig although usually a barber pig wouldn't hurt the skin, he
would just barber more of the hair elsewhere. Is Rusty is a sow? Check both
girls for hair loss if not lesions on both flanks, it wont happen on just
one, that's indicative of a hormonal imbalance caused by trouble with the
female organs so this wont be seen in boars, also you will see increased
thirst, weight loss, and development of a pear shape but all these symptoms
over time, but not usually sores. So it could be fungal, but I always treat
for mites first and it works most of the time. The scrape tests just don't
catch mites very often. Did the vet discus fungal infections, discuss it
with him when you get the ivermectin shots, 2 or 3 shots 7 to 10 days apart
to catch hatchlings. I prefer Ivermectin to Revolution even though it
involves injections because it kills internal parasites as well, but if
mites persist in a population the two can be traded off once every few
months to prevent a tolerance from developing. Ivermectin first though.
Until this is diagnosed treated and cured you should send out or take in any
new pigs. Let us know how it develops, best regards Sandy and Sammy
