Regarding Spicy, I agree that it's most likely just a normal part of aging. 



For a long while there, Carmen would be a little harder to rouse, and I thought the same thing you did - oh, she's gone deaf.  I think it's just like with older humans.  Sometimes it takes the piggy a little longer to wake up. 



Don't worry - she is just getting elderly.
