HI Corrine and all. I had the distinct privilege of talking to Ann early
Mon.,
rather listening to her voice mail messages afterwards as I was asleep. She
is treating
several piggies with thrush currently. This is a transcription of Ann's
message from Monday early am but it was rejected by admin for being too
long, they asked me to resubmit after chopping it in half, so here it is
late, as I had to dash out to a rally at the state capitol. Also my own
comments are interspersed, this is an updated version of what I sent you
this morning as I had referred to thrush which is not yet diagnosed in
Sparkles although it can easily occur in a piggy in Sparkles condition, in
this case it was a mistake I was thinking of Chakalaka, not Sparkles and I
made a typo in the Panacur dosage.

Since the title now has a part 1 and part 2 in it you may not see it in the
title cause I have to tack it at the end of the title where it may not be
easily visible, I am telling you this as I am concerned some might think
it's a double post, it's not, so if you already dumped the part 2 please
retrieve it.

Ann says the very most important thing is to stay on the Panacur, 5 doses,
given orally,
0.4 ml of 2.5% solution (which amounts to a 10 mg dose), and 2 to 3 doses
ivermectin,
(2 doses if the highly preferred addition of the baths described below are
used). Ivermectin is given as
0.2 ml, given orally so the vet can give you take home doses of the
ivermectin and panacur. Make sure this is what the vet gives her, the exact
same product that is usually given by the vet via a syringe with needle into
a muscle works perfectly well given by the thin syringe with no
needle, tastes bad but a fresh food serving immed after will clear up
attitude probs that may result with Sparkles.

Remembering that the main diagnosis is bacteria in the fecal, and parasites
with an
unknown source of an unknown bacteria. Also Baytril, Panacur, and Ivermectin
can be given together and should be in
Sparkles case since she is started on Baytril already as we know.
1. Stay on the Baytril as you emailed you are, never discontinue an
antibiotic unless an adverse reaction or its replaced with another one,
sometimes 2 are used together.(not this case yet)or unless the vet tells you
to discontinue.

2. Here is how to treat the bald spot. I use this following product all the
time as I
imagine many of you do, use the over-the-counter cream for athletes foot,
it's miconizole nitrate, 2% cream, apply twice a day. The brand name we see
is Lotrimin and its under $5 in the foot care section of my stores here, it
is also available cheaper as a generic right next to the Lotrimin. If
that cant be found use the spray version of the same drug. She says the
bald spot should be covered with
something, if not the miconizole nitrate, to keep it moist with something
such as a hand cream, but the miconizole nitrate is by far the best as the
miconizole nitrate treats the fungal or bacterial infection, hand cream does
not. Use 14 days (note we are
not talking about the naturally occurring bald spot normally appearing just
behind each piggies ears)

3. Also Sparkles should be having the anti parasitic bath of small amounts
of Adams shampoo with the pyrethrums twice a week that I previously
mentioned is in Ann's/ and the Oxford Cavy Trusts antiparasitic protocol I
sent you
separately. Add the anti fungal component to the bath which is a solution
of Betadyne, the orange stuff we poor over our kids scrapes before we add a
band-aid. Bathe 2 times per week in this mix. Betadyne solution is available
over the counter, if you don’t see it ask the pharmacist for it, very
inexpensive.

4. VOG Ann explains the sulfuric content of vog saying it can cause
breathing probs, irritation, etc., and says you can additionally treat it
(if it is bothering your cavies) with Children's Sudafed (the kind that the
only active ingredient is pseudoephedrine), 0.1ml, 2 times a day and if
lung irritation occurs add anti inflammatory/pain med, Rimadyl, 2 times
daily, start with 5 mg, then cut the dose in half to one 5mg dose per day
after 5 days.
