Dear Jocelyn,
Whenever a piggy goes off of food or has had dental work done on the
molars it should always be treated with an anti fungal drug according to
BAR. Piggys are very susceptible to oral thrush which can be in the
throat and not be seen. The pain of the oral thrush is what can put a
piggy off of eating. I do not know where you live. If in the USA, BAR
recommends Nystatin oral suspension 100,000 USP units. Dose orally 0.3
ml twice a day for 10 days. In Europe, BAR recommends Daktarin Oral Gel.
Dose orally 0.5 ml three times a day for the first week, 0.5 ml twice a
day for week 2 and 0.5 ml once a day for week 3. He should also be on
pain medication, but not Metacam. BAR recommends Rimadyl. Dose orally 10
mg twice a day for the first 3 days then 5 mg twice a day for days 4-10.
If your vet does not want to prescribe Rimadyl you can buy over the
counter children's ibuprofen known as children's Nurofen in the UK. It
contains 100 mg Ibuprofen per 5 ml. Dose orally 0.4 ml twice a day for
the first 3 days then 0.2 ml twice a day for days 4-10. Cavies need a
minimum of 40 ml of water/day. Fatbottom may be dehydrated and needs to
be syringed more water or Pedialyte or have the vet give Ringers
solution subcutaneously 10 ml 2 – 3 times in one day.

Cheers,

Ann and the Rescued Piggys of Piggyville, Tampa Florida USA.
