Corrine and Michael,

I am so sorry that Snoopy has left you for the Rainbow Bridge.

When I read your first post, I suspected congestive heart failure from the information that you gave but, before I could reply, I read your second post and it was too late. At his age and with no cavy savvy vet at your disposal, there was probably no more that you could have done for him except to hold him and tell him how much you loved him. Five and a half years is a really good age for a piggy so please do not blame yourself. If there is no cavy specialist on your island, unless you have the necessary drugs to hand, there really is nothing else that you can do. Even with a box full of drugs, there is no guarantee that you can win every time.

How do others cope? For me, with a large herd of these wonderful little creatures, it has to be a case of getting on with it. There are too many little ones dependent on my care for me to fall apart. Of course, there are always floods of tears every time that I lose one but I hope that I can give them all the best possible life for as long as they are here and there are more piggies out there that need our help. My Rodentologist's motto is that "if we didn't love them then who would?" and I agree with her.

We can only do the best that we can and hopefully continue to learn more as the years go by.

You will have wonderful memories of dear Snoopy so focus on those and you will find that it does get easier. You never, ever forget those that you have loved for they are always there in a special place. I often look at my hundreds of photos of Piggyfriends past and the tears well up even after very many years but the ones that are here now need me and give me such joy.

I hope that Sparkles is recovering. Concentrate on helping her and caring for your other piggies.

Take care.

Penny and the Piggyfriends.
