This may sound really weird, but It sounds like the guinea pig version of (human) pleurisy.  I don't know if they can get it, but they can get almost anything that humans can get.  I've had pleurisy more than once and this is how I recognized the description.  Is it possible that Reese has something along these lines?  Pleurisy is an infection between the linings of the lungs.  (There are two linings around each lung and when the space in between the two linings gets infected, it hurts like you can't imagine.)  If that is what it is, antibiotics should fix the problem, but it takes a while.  I've heard people compare the pain of pleurisy with the pain caused by a heart attack and it does cause labored breathing and shortness of breath.
