Dear Ellen,
There are dissolving sutures that can take 3-4 months to dissolve.
However these sutures are usually used subcutaneously. They can be used
to suture skin. Since cavy skin will heal in 4 days, I prefer to use
Vicryl polyglactin absorbable sutures that dissolve in 14 days.
Whenever a cavy's incisors need to be cut the opposing incisors should
be cut to the same length. This is demonstrated in the dental material I
sent you from BAR and in Vedra's book that you have. Drooling before and
after molar surgery is almost always due to the tongue being entrapped
by the mandibular premolars or molars. Even though cavy's do not have
pain nerves in their teeth their tongues and the mouth lining can be
inflamed due to malocclusions. Thus Dr. King is correct that you should
give her NSAIDS. Did he give you any rimadyl? If yes she should take 5
mg twice a day or whatever he prescribed. If you have childrens
Ibuprofen then give her 0.2 ml twice a day. Both of these NSAIDS should
only be needed for 5 days after surgery on the molars. It is good that
you are taking her in for a recheck the day after Thanksgiving. Keep
putting the cream under her neck to prevent a rash or fungal infection.
Keep up the syringe feeding and the Daktarin oral gel. You are a very
dedicated cavy mom. I am not a vet but I volunteer as a cavy health
advisor for Dr. Frank Bonsack DVM of the Adventure Animal Hospital in
Tampa Florida.
