I was taught by BAR to always use a bacteriostatic eye ONITMENT first. I
always use chloramphenicol eye ointment 3 times a day for 5 to 7 days.
It has always worked in every case I have treated. Eye drops tend to
flood the eye and drain off into the tear ducts. Cavies naturally
produce viscous milky white tears when they clean their eyes. An eye
ointment placed into the conjunctival sack, the lower eye lid, has a
better chance of staying in contact with the infected eyes than drops
do. If eye drops have not worked in 2 weeks and the type you are using
primarily kills only gram negative bacteria I would ask my vet for
chloramphenicol eye ointment. I am not a vet but I volunteer as a cavy
health advisor for Dr. Frank Bonsack DVM of the Adventure Animal
Hospital in Tampa Florida.
