Sorry to hear that he is old & on his way to the bridge. I guess we can expect it when they get that age, but it is never easy.
My Tasha did the same thing & I tried to get her to eat. I took here to the vet & he said the food was just sitting in her stomach. He said everything was just shutting down & he should go ahead & put her to sleep. 
It is hard when you can't do anything to make them better. I'll send prayers your way.
