Cavy urine is very alkaline with a pH of 8.0-8.5. Excess calcium and
other minerals are excreted in cavy urine. The high alkaline pH is a
favorable environment for kidney stones made of calcium to form.
Potassium citrate makes the urine more alkaline. However, potassium also
binds to calcium making calcium kidney stone formation less likely. I do
not know how much potassium citrate should be given to a cavy.
