Dear Ellen,
I do not know the concentration of Imodium = loperamide hydrochloride
oral solution, that you are giving Sami. However, you can give 2.0 mg in
one dose. The generic Imodium that I have sates that there is 1.0 mg of
loperamide hydrochloride in 5.0 ml. Thus, I could give 10.0 ml of the
oral solution at one time. 2.0 mg is the maximum amount that you can
give in 24 hours, however you can give it all in one dose. On the other
hand you may want to treat the diarrhea with activated charcoal. This
can be used as long as you are not giving other medications such as
antibiotics or anti-inflammatories. I use activated "charocaps" that I
buy at the local pharmacy. Just pour out the contents of one capsule and
mix with water or juice and syringe as much as Sami will take. Activated
charcoal also absorbs toxins and treats gas and is good to have in your
first aid kit in case of accidental poisoning. Charcoal is not absorbed
by the gi tract. You can not overdose Sami on it. You can give her
several doses/day. You can also buy the tablets and just crush them. It
will make her feces black and gritty. Syringe her lots of water to make
it go down easy.
Best of health. I am just a CCT trained piggy health advisor with 30
