[Gpdd] HEALTH: Anorexia

Hi Joanie. Guinea Pigs usually only have anorexia when they are too sick or
in pain to eat. It's a really bad sign. The piggy was already sick since
Baytril was prescribed so look to what the underlying condition is. Giving
piggy antibiotics for a short time then withdrawing them allows the original
infection to grow back quickly with evermore-resistant bacteria. Normally if
one antibiotic fails, another is started to continue the healing. Guinea
Lynx has a list of other antibiotics approved for guinea pigs. Also
overgrown teeth or a fungal infection in the mouth can cause a piggy to not
be able to eat or to be too painful to eat. Are there those white patches in
his mouth? Fungal infections often follow antibiotic treatment and are
treated with Daktarin gel. The food that's being syringed needs to be
Critter-be-better or Oxbow as they have the probiotics piggies need.

So the cause can be either the primary or a secondary condition. What was
the original sickness?

This sounds very serious. There must be a professional involved. Remember I
am not a vet at all, just a piggy parent.
Best regards
Sandy Sammy and AR
